The Experience
Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of only two places in Uganda — and one of only three countries in the world — where you can trek wild mountain gorillas. The park sits at the heart of the Virunga Massif, a chain of eight ancient volcanoes straddling Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family — a habituated group of around 10 individuals including a dominant silverback, several females, and playful juveniles.
Treks begin at the Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger station at the park headquarters, where you'll receive a briefing from your guide before setting off into the forest. The terrain ranges from bamboo thickets and Hagenia woodland to open Afro-alpine moorland, and the trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas have moved that morning.
When you find the Nyakagezi family, you'll have exactly one uninterrupted hour with them — watching the silverback feed, mothers nurse their infants, and juveniles wrestle and play just metres away. It is, without question, one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth.
Mgahinga offers a more intimate experience than the busier sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — with only one gorilla family and a maximum of 8 visitors per day, the atmosphere is quieter and the encounter feels genuinely personal.

What to Expect
Early morning (6–7 am)
Ranger Station Briefing
Arrive at the UWA ranger station for a briefing on gorilla behaviour, trekking rules, and what to expect. Your guide will share the latest information on where the Nyakagezi family was last spotted.
Morning (7 am onwards)
The Trek Begins
Set off into the forest with your guide and armed ranger escort. The trail winds through bamboo forest, Hagenia woodland, and open moorland. Porters are available to carry your pack.
Variable (2–6 hrs in)
Finding the Gorillas
Trackers go ahead each morning to locate the family. When you reach them, you'll hear the guide's signal — and then you'll see them. The moment you lock eyes with a silverback for the first time is unforgettable.

Time with the Family
You have exactly one hour with the Nyakagezi family. Watch, photograph, and simply be present. Guides will help you interpret behaviour — feeding, grooming, play, and the silverback's quiet authority.
Afternoon
Return & Debrief
Trek back to the ranger station, where you'll receive your gorilla trekking certificate. The afternoon is free to relax at your lodge, reflect on the experience, or combine with golden monkey trekking.
Preparation
What to Bring
- Sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots (broken in)
- Long trousers and long-sleeved shirt (protects from nettles)
- Waterproof jacket or poncho
- Warm layer — altitude means cool mornings
- Gardening gloves (for grabbing vegetation on steep sections)

- Camera (no flash permitted with gorillas)
- Small daypack with snacks and 2L water
- Walking pole (optional but helpful)
Rules & Guidelines
Gorilla Trekking Rules
- Maximum 8 visitors per gorilla family per day
- Minimum age: 15 years
- Keep a minimum distance of 7 metres from the gorillas
- No flash photography
- Do not eat or drink within 200 metres of the gorillas
- If you feel unwell (cold, flu), you may not trek — gorillas are susceptible to human diseases
- Speak quietly and move slowly
- Do not mimic gorilla behaviour or make direct eye contact with the silverback
- Follow your guide's instructions at all times
- Permits are non-refundable but may be transferable
