The Virunga Volcanoes

Three Summits, One Ancient Massif

The Virunga Massif is a chain of eight ancient volcanoes straddling the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Three of these volcanoes — Muhabura, Sabyinyo, and Gahinga — rise within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and can be hiked with a licensed guide and permit.

Each volcano offers a distinct experience: Muhabura's crater lake and panoramic summit, Sabyinyo's dramatic three-country ridge, and Gahinga's bamboo forest and crater swamp. All three pass through the same extraordinary sequence of vegetation zones — bamboo forest, Hagenia woodland, giant heather, and open Afro-alpine moorland — making the hike as rewarding as the summit.

Mount Muhabura

4,127 m·Strenuous·8–10 hours

Highest of the three Ugandan Virunga volcanoes. The summit rewards with a small crater lake and sweeping views across Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC on clear days.

The trail climbs steeply through bamboo forest, Hagenia woodland, and open moorland before reaching the rocky summit. Cold temperatures and mist are common near the top.

Mount Sabyinyo

3,669 m·Strenuous·8–10 hours

The most dramatic summit in the Virungas — a jagged ridge where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet. Standing on the summit, you can literally have one foot in each country.

The final ascent involves scrambling along a narrow ridge with steep drops on both sides. Ropes and ladders assist on the most exposed sections. Not for those with a fear of heights.

Mount Gahinga

3,474 m·Moderate–Strenuous·6–8 hours

The most accessible of the three volcanoes, with a beautiful swamp-filled crater at the summit. The trail passes through dense bamboo forest — excellent for golden monkey sightings en route.

The lower slopes are the best place in Mgahinga to spot golden monkeys. The summit crater contains a small swamp and offers views of Muhabura and Sabyinyo.

FAQ

Volcano Hiking Questions

How many volcanoes can you hike in Mgahinga?

There are three hikeable volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Mount Muhabura (4,127m), Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m), and Mount Gahinga (3,474m). Each requires a separate permit and guide.

Do I need a permit to hike the Virunga volcanoes?

Yes — a hiking permit is required for each volcano. Permits are obtained through Uganda Wildlife Authority and must be arranged in advance through a licensed tour operator like Akagera & Apes.

Which volcano is easiest to hike in Mgahinga?

Mount Gahinga (3,474m) is the most accessible of the three, with a 6–8 hour round trip and a beautiful crater swamp at the summit. The trail passes through bamboo forest where golden monkeys are often seen.

Can I hike more than one volcano in a day?

It is not recommended to hike more than one volcano per day. Each is a full-day commitment, and the altitude and terrain are demanding. Most visitors spread the three hikes over three separate days.

Is altitude sickness a concern on the Virunga volcanoes?

Altitude sickness can be a concern on Muhabura (4,127m) in particular. We recommend spending at least one night at altitude before attempting the higher peaks, staying well hydrated, and ascending slowly. Porters and guides are trained to recognise altitude sickness symptoms.
