Why Kisoro for Birding

A Premier Albertine Rift Birding Destination

Kisoro sits at the heart of the Albertine Rift — one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth and Africa's most important endemic bird area. The combination of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park's montane forest, the bamboo zone of the Virunga volcanoes, the Afro-alpine moorland of the higher slopes, and the crater lakes and highland farmland of the surrounding district creates an extraordinary diversity of habitats — and an equally extraordinary bird list.

Mgahinga alone hosts over 180 bird species, including 13 Albertine Rift endemics — species found nowhere else on Earth outside this narrow rift valley corridor. The Rwenzori Turaco, with its brilliant crimson wing patches and emerald-green plumage, is the star attraction; but the full list of endemics, sunbirds, turacos, and forest species makes Kisoro a destination that serious birders return to again and again.

Birding in Kisoro can be combined with any of the other activities in the area — many of the best birding spots are along the same trails used for gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, and volcano hiking, making it easy to build a multi-activity itinerary that maximises both wildlife and birding opportunities.

Where to Bird

Best Birding Spots in Kisoro

Mgahinga Bamboo Zone

The lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes are covered in dense bamboo forest — the best habitat for Albertine Rift endemics including the Rwenzori Turaco, Grauer's Warbler, and Dusky Crimsonwing.

Hagenia–Hypericum Forest

The mid-altitude forest zone hosts a rich mix of forest species including sunbirds, warblers, flycatchers, and the spectacular Regal Sunbird.

Afro-Alpine Moorland

The higher slopes above the treeline offer open moorland birding with Rwenzori Nightjar, Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird, and various raptors.

Lake Mutanda & Mulehe

The crater lakes are excellent for waterbirds — African Fish Eagle, Grey Crowned Crane, Malachite Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, and various herons and egrets.

Kisoro Town & Farmland

The terraced hillsides and gardens around Kisoro town are surprisingly productive — Grey Crowned Crane, African Harrier-Hawk, and numerous sunbirds and weavers.

Park Headquarters Area

The gardens and forest edge around Mgahinga park headquarters are a reliable spot for early morning birding — often the best place to find the Rwenzori Turaco.
