The Lakes
Two of Uganda's Most Beautiful Lakes
Nestled in the highlands of Kisoro District at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, Lake Mutanda and Lake Mulehe are two of the most scenically spectacular lakes in Uganda. Both are crater lakes — formed in ancient volcanic calderas — and both offer glassy, calm waters that perfectly reflect the towering volcanic peaks above.
Lake Mutanda is the larger and more visited of the two, dotted with small islands that can be explored by traditional dugout canoe. The lake is home to hippos, otters, and a rich variety of waterbirds, and the views of Muhabura, Sabyinyo, and Gahinga rising above the water are among the most photographed in Uganda.
Lake Mulehe, a short drive from Kisoro town, offers a quieter and more remote experience — ideal for birding, sunset paddling, and those who want to escape the crowds entirely. The lake is surrounded by terraced hillsides and small fishing communities, and the atmosphere is one of complete tranquillity.
Canoeing on either lake is a perfect complement to the more physically demanding activities in Kisoro — a peaceful, restorative experience that showcases the extraordinary natural beauty of the Kigezi highlands.
