From cherry to cup — discover the full story of Ugandan arabica coffee on the mist-covered hillsides of the Kigezi highlands.
Uganda's Coffee Story
Uganda is one of Africa's most important coffee-producing nations, and the highlands of Kisoro — at elevations between 1,800 and 2,500 metres — produce some of the country's finest highland arabica. The cool temperatures, rich volcanic soils, and reliable rainfall of the Kigezi region create ideal growing conditions, and the coffee grown here is prized for its bright acidity, floral notes, and complex fruit flavours.
The coffee experience in Kisoro takes you to a local smallholder farm — the backbone of Uganda's coffee industry — where you'll walk through the coffee garden with a farmer guide, learn to identify the different stages of cherry ripeness, and understand the traditional processing methods that have been used in this region for generations.
You'll see the full journey from cherry to cup: picking, pulping, fermentation, washing, drying, hulling, roasting, and brewing. The experience ends with a traditional coffee ceremony — roasting beans over an open fire, grinding by hand, and brewing in a clay pot — followed by a tasting of the finished coffee with local snacks.
It's a grounding, sensory experience that connects you to the land and the people of Kisoro in a way that few other activities can — and the coffee tastes extraordinary when you know exactly where it came from.
