Birding, kayaking & the Congo Nile Trail on one of Africa's most beautiful lakes.
Lake Kivu is one of Africa's most underrated destinations — a vast, island-studded Rift Valley lake sitting on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, ringed by volcanic mountains and terraced hillsides. This 3-day retreat is designed for travellers who want to slow down, breathe in the lake air, and experience Rwanda's western highlands at their most serene.
The centrepiece of this tour is a specialist birding experience — Lake Kivu and its surrounding forests are home to over 650 bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else on Earth. Your dedicated birding guide will lead you through lakeside papyrus fringes, forest patches, and open water habitats across all three days, with early-morning sessions timed for peak activity.
Beyond birding, the itinerary weaves in a sunset pirogue cruise, a guided section of the legendary Congo Nile Trail, kayaking through volcanic islands, a traditional fishing village visit, and a morning island boat excursion — all framed by the extraordinary scenery of one of Africa's most beautiful lakes.
Lake Kivu sits within the Albertine Rift — one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots and a globally significant Important Bird Area (IBA). The lake's papyrus swamps, forested islands, and surrounding montane forests create a mosaic of habitats that support an extraordinary range of species.
All birding sessions are led by a specialist guide with deep knowledge of Kivu's avifauna. Binoculars and a field checklist are provided.
Depart Kigali early for the scenic 2.5-hour drive west through Rwanda's famous Thousand Hills, descending to the shores of Lake Kivu — one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes, sitting at 1,460 m above sea level. Check in to your lakeside lodge and settle in before an afternoon guided birding walk along the shoreline. Lake Kivu and its surrounding forests host over 650 bird species, including the African Fish Eagle, Malachite Kingfisher, Grey-crowned Crane, and the endemic Grauer's Swamp Warbler. As the sun dips toward the Congo hills, board a traditional wooden pirogue for a golden-hour boat cruise past volcanic islands, watching herons and cormorants roost for the night.
Lake Kivu is beautiful year-round. The dry seasons (Jun–Sep & Dec–Feb) offer the clearest skies and calmest lake conditions for kayaking and boat cruises. The green seasons bring lush hillsides and excellent birding as migratory species arrive.
"The birding guide was exceptional — we spotted 47 species on Day 1 alone. Lake Kivu is absolutely magical."
